27.05.2015

As an overseas school under the auspicious of the Western Australian Ministry of Education WASS delivers the Western Australian Curriculum in Vietnam. As part of this program, students in Grades 3, 5, 7 and 9 every May participate in the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy. NAPLAN was firstly deployed in 2008 and has become part of the annual assessment for schools in Australia as well as for Australian overseas schools.

What is NAPLAN?

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual national assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9. All students in these year levels are expected to participate in tests to assess reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. Many government and non-government educational authorities have contributed to the development of the NAPLAN materials.

Why do students do NAPLAN tests?

NAPLAN is used to determine whether or not students reach the required standards of literacy and numeracy. The tests provide parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. They also provide the schools, with information about how the respective school’s education programs are working and which areas need to be prioritised for improvement. NAPLAN tests are one aspect of each school’s assessment and reporting process, and can’t be replaced by the standard school extensive, ongoing assessments made by teachers about each student’s performance.

What will be tested?

NAPLAN is a skills test. It tests the skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life, such as reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy. The National Education Board of English and Mathematics is responsible for the content of each test which are also learning frameworks for the students. NAPLAN tests will be done through multiple choices or short answers.

Who will administer the exam?

NAPLAN is conducted at schools and will be supervised by teachers, principals or vice principals. At the Western Australian International School System, all the tests will be marked by Australian NAPLAN educational authorities following strict official guidelines.

How NAPLAN test is scored?

NAPLAN is not a pass or fail test. Individual academic achievements are expressed on a scale of national achievement for each test. Each scale consists of ten steps and all grades are reported according to the same scale point. All the tests in each grade are scored using the six levels, including a level which represents the minimum national standard for the students at each grade level. Achieving the minimum national standards indicates that the students complete necessary basic skills in literacy and numeracy of according to their years. Based on the results, we can compare each student’s achievement to the average ones of students in Australia.

How is NAPLAN test results used?

  • The school uses the results to identify strengths and weaknesses in the curriculum and set targets in literacy and mathematics.
  • School systems use results to review programs and resources for schools.
  • Students and parents may use individual results to discuss the possibilities for progress with teachers.
  • Teachers use results to identify students who require greater challenges or require further assistance.
